Lecturer of Philosophy and Humanities

The University of New Hampshire at Manchester (UNH Manchester) invites applications for a Lecturer of Philosophy and Humanities in the Division of Humanities. This is a non-tenure-track appointment with a one academic-year renewable contract to begin fall 2012.

We are seeking highly qualified candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in philosophy and in the Humanities. Applicants should possess at least a master's degree in philosophy and/or relevant interdisciplinary studies by the time of application. A doctorate in philosophy and/or relevant interdisciplinary studies is preferred.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate philosophy and interdisciplinary humanities courses; program development of the Humanities Major; advising and mentoring students; serving on college and university committees; and serving the community of educators, and professionals in philosophy and interdisciplinary studies. Summer teaching appointments are available.

Instructional responsibilities include teaching the following courses in the Humanities program: Interdisciplinary Humanities (introductory and upper division offerings), Social and Political Philosophy and Logic. Other courses based on the candidate's area of specialization may also be available. A typical teaching load is three 4-credit courses per semester.

THE UNIVERSITY of LOUISVILLE

Preferred Qualifications
           The program seeks a scholar with a distinguished record of teaching and research. Expertise may include but should expand beyond the United States and Western Europe. While candidates may be based in a traditional discipline, the program is searching particularly for scholars who work from an interdisciplinary, international, and/or comparative perspective. Administrative experience is a plus.

Position Summary
           Provides learning activities and support that leads to student achievement of course objectives and contributes to the educational environment of the Lone Star College System and community. Responsibilities include learning facilitation, personal and professional development, and institutional and community service.

Job Function
          1. Teaches humanities classes; times, locations and formats may vary.
          2. Coaches and assists the forensics team, including weekend travel to tournaments and judging.
          3. Serves as college representative to the Humanities curriculum team.
          4. Submits required college reports and forms.
          5. Develops and utilizes a course syllabus for each course following established institutional guidelines.
          6. Advises students in academic matters and serves on college and system committees as required.
          7. Provides timely, quality access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication and other appropriate methods.
          8. Continuously improves instructional quality by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods, including collaborative learning, learning communities, service learning, instructional technology, and online education.
          9. Evaluates students by a variety of means to measure their progress in achieving course objectives and informs them in a timely manner of their progress.
          10. Maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community.
          11. Creates and meets institutional service and professional development goals in collaboration with Dean.
          12. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
          A Master's degree in Humanities, Liberal Arts, Art History, or a Master's degree with a minimum of eighteen graduate semester hours from any one or combination of the following areas: Philosophy, English Literature, Arts, History, and Humanities. Graduate hours in Speech or Foreign Languages would not be appropriate. A Master's in Classical Studies is appropriate. "Arts" is limited to an MFA or a minimum of 15 of the 18 graduate hours in non-performance arts.
          LSC-Online certification or a commitment to obtain certification through Lone Star College System within 12 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications:
          Community college teaching experience
          Recent and successful experience in coaching a forensics program

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
          Demonstrated mastery of course content.
          Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
          Effective oral and written communication skills.

Hiring Range
          Salary is commensurate with education and qualifications. This is a full-time position with a 10.5 month work schedule. Position begins in Spring 2012.

Work Schedule
          Courses are taught at a variety of times and locations in response to student and institutional needs.
